Beef consumption rises

In the first five months of the year, the beef consumption reached its highest figure since 2003.

The beef consumption figures are 6.5% greater than those of the same period in 2008.

In the period between January-May 2008, domestic consumption reached 64,709 tons, whereas in the first 5 months of 2009 it reached 69,000 tons.

The percentage of variation of the first five months of the year 2009 compared to the same period in 2005 has been 30 % superior.

According to the figures of INAC's Directorate of Domestic Market Control, the consumption of sheep meat in the first five months of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008, increased by 63%, reaching the levels of 2007, since in 2008 sheep meat consumption had significantly decreased.

INAC's President, Mr. Alfredo Fratti declared that this is due to stability and non exorbitant prices, in the framework of the work that this Administration has coordinated between the government and the private sectors.
