The conference on Animal Welfare by Dr. Neville Gregory, from Bristol University, Veterinary Science, England, comes to an end.

Dr. Neville Gregory, from the University of Bristol, England, was the speaker at the Conference on Animal Welfare.

The activity was organized by the OIE Collaboration Centre on Animal Welfare, which Chile and Uruguay jointly coordinate together with the Technical Group on Animal Welfare, and took place at the headquarters of DILAVE, Miguel C. Rubino.

The aim of the activity was to improve export capacity of the meat packing industry regarding issues related to stunning prior to slaughter, so as to obtain improvement in management and animal welfare before slaughter.

Offer the basic concepts of neurophisiology related to animal slaughter, to avoid unnecessary suffering of the animals at slaughter and offer training on the correct practices, different methods and maintenance of equipment, etc.

Three technicians from the National Meat Institute took part and four students from the 2013 - Meat Industry Specialization Postgraduate Degree. INAC was represented by the Quality Control and Development Director, Ricardo Robaina.

Visits to meat packing plants were also carried out.

This week Ed Green from the United Kingdom also visited Uruguay, within the framework of the leader formation program of the meat sector. Green has specialized in Economy and is the leader of a producer organization which maintains strong links with business and the industry.

Ed Green came to Uruguay in an international tour, analyzing meat chains throughout the world. It is a university postgraduate programme in the UK, in which Bob Bansback is involved, leader of the IMS Economics group. Ed Green visited Australia, New Zealand, United States, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay.

Green will also visit meat packing plants and farms and will meet with technicians form INAC and INIA.
